The hidden havoc of winter

BEFORE: The Hidden Havoc of Winter

As the chilling grip of winter began to relent, a local homeowner was confronted with the season's stealthy and destructive aftermath. An ice dam - a frequent but often unnoticed winter phenomenon - had stealthily taken shape along their roof during the freezing months. This icy obstruction acted as a barrier for melting snow, inhibiting it from draining off the roof.

As time passed, the entrapped water infiltrated the home's structure, inflicting considerable, hidden damage that only came to light with the onset of spring. The once flawless ceiling was now scarred by unpleasant water stains - a mute witness to the unseen invasion of the meltwater. The walls, previously vibrant with fresh paint, were now blemished by flaking layers. The hardwood flooring that once boasted of a smooth and polished surface was now warped and misshapen.

The window wrap, a key shield against the ruthless weather, was discolored and deformed, its protective role compromised. Hidden beneath the serene allure of the winter landscape, a secret attack on the home's integrity had been carried out. It was more than mere superficial damage; it was a silent, insidious damage that showed its face only after the final snowflake had melted. This was the hidden cost of winter - a stark reminder that even the most beautiful season can conceal damaging forces.

Water Dam Repairs

AFTER: Unveiling the Restoration

Our first order of business was to remove all water damaged materials, taking precautions not to worsen the already extensive damage. We installed new, high-quality sheetrock, creating a seamless transition between the old and the new.

Next on the list was the task of painting. Despite our efforts to match the paint for all our projects, achieving a seamless match becomes challenging when dealing with paint that has been on the surface for a few years. We tackled this by applying paint to the entire ceiling, ensuring no mismatched colors at the natural breaks. Similarly, we covered the damaged walls from corner to corner with wall paint, all in pursuit of that perfect match.

The window wrap reinstallation was a meticulous process, ensuring the new wrap mirrored the original style and color, thereby reinstating its protective role against the elements.

The floor repairs hit a snag when we found out the specific hardwood style we needed was no longer available. So, we replaced the flooring in the entire area. We then crafted and installed new base trim that perfectly matched the existing style, preserving the room's original charm despite the extensive floor change.

The goal was not solely to repair the damage, but to do so in a way that seamlessly blended the new and the old, erasing all traces of the previous damage. Ultimately, it was about making it seem as if the damage had never occurred. Restored to its original glory, the home stood tall. The toll of the ice dam was erased, replaced by a beautifully restored home. It was now ready to face many more winters to come.

RESTORING PEACE OF MIND, ONE HOME AT A TIME.
